I've finished adding multiple choice! 😃

To use it, select "Multiple choice" when learning or reviewing:

Currently, you need to select this every time you want to do a multiple choice test. God willing, I'll be soon adding some options to make this choice more permanent 🙂

Also, my apologies to anyone who tried to use the site today and found it broken. I accidentally broke the learn and review pages for a few hours by releasing multiple choice in a half-finished state, and it took me a few hours to fix.

neoncube It is useful to have an "Unknown" option to avoid a random selection when an unknown word is given. If possible, it would be smoother if a key ([0] etc) could be assigned to it.

Hi @[deleted], Sadly this feature doesn't seem to be working - I end up with a clear picture (of your background landscape).

Let me know if you need me to state the steps.

Also having selected Multiple Choice it seems to revert to Typing quite often.

7shi Ah, good idea! That should be easy to implement 🙂

@[deleted] Thanks for letting me know! Does this happen for all courses or just for a particular course? If it's just happens on some courses, can you post a link to one of them? If it happens to all courses, what browser are you using?

I haven't yet added an option for making the Multiple Choice/Typing option permanent.

By the way, several words may have the same definition.

      For example:

      https://mylittlewordland.com/course/75793

      Image description

(This is not a mistake because the distinction is based on whether the next word begins with a consonant or a vowel.)

      This case causes a problem.

      Image description

It could be right or wrong, depending on luck.

      Image description

Q and A in reverse would also cause a problem.

      Image description

In typing, the same problem occurs. It is impossible to determine whether "e" or "ed" is correct. (I experienced the same problem in Memrise.)

      Image description

      As a solution:

      • In the former, eliminate options with the same content.
      • In the latter, both are correct answers.

7shi Ooooo, yes, thanks! 🙂 Let me see if I can fix that really quick.

        This is awesome, great work!

I'm wondering if you'd consider some customization options for this? Like showing different number of options (like how memrise uses 4) or maybe if it's possible have the number vary (not sure how useful that is).

I really like how memrise switches between giving you the audio, the English word, and giving you the other languages word. Any plans to implement that? Maybe have customization where you can select multiple options of types of learning it and maybe it randomly selects one for each question.

Regardless, thanks for doing all this.

I really like how memrise switches between giving you the audio, the English word, and giving you the other languages word.

This feature is available on Community courses, and it is actually set up by Creators or Contributors who have set up pairs based on available 'columns' of information.

@[deleted] has already acknowledged that in my bird courses I have Song, Photo and Name and this leads to SIX pairs (ie 3 plus the reversed!). [3! ie three factorial options.]

schlick Ah, yes, thanks for the reminder! I was planning to include a setting for how many options should be included in a multiple choice test 🙂

Mixing columns in a single test is an interesting idea.

I have a feeling this would probably work better with some languages than with others. For Chinese, the language that I primarily learn, I generally find it useful to keep the testing direction the same during a single test, because switching between typing English and typing Chinese requires switching between keyboards, and also because it's slow to have to check whether the test is asking for the Chinese word's English definition or pronunciation.

For most languages, I can see how this would be nice, though, since it's generally obvious when looking at a word which language it's in. I can see how adding audio would be nice, too 🙂

I think this would probably work well for non-language courses, too.

Thanks for letting me know! Does this happen for all courses or just for a particular course?

Hi @[deleted] - I've tried a few courses and Multiple Choice works fine but not theses ones:

7 Days My Little Word Land (for either option)

Split verses My Little Word Land

            neoncube

I hadn't considered the difficultly if the languages don't use the same alphabet. This should still work for multiple choice questions at least.

I find that alternating languages read/typed and switching to audio as well forces my brain to switch gears, which I find helpful. I'm a big fan of when Memrise mixes in the short videos as well. Ideally I'd like a picture option as well, but I think that's a course issue not an options issue.

For multiple choice question type, will this website provide some special and challenging types?

            • Odd one out
            • Multiple select with Select ALL and Select NONE: Respondents have to select multiple correct options or even all options or none of the options to answer the question.
            • Matrix type
            • Ranking type
              7 days later

First of all, the multiple choice feature helps a lot. Especially for translations with added explanations or the likes. Thank you so much for implementing this.

Additionally would you consider giving the learner the opportunity to just tell the system, if he remembered the word in question or not? That would be so great! Often I might remember a word, but it still just doesn't sit. Then I would like to repeat it much earlier than the algorythm might present it again. And sometimes it's just the other way around and I misspell some word that I know well enough, just because typing on such a small keyboard is a pain.

michi Yes, I'd definitely like to add a "Mark my answer as correct" button! 🙂 In fact, I'd like to also eventually add a history page where one can retroactively delete an answer, mark it as correct, etc. in case one, say, does a bunch of reviewing late at night and regrets it the next morning :P

If you remember a word but it doesn't sit, would selecting "I don't know" be good enough, or would you like the ability to be able to select the correct answer but then mark the word as not being remembered well?

                Kingextreme Interesting ideas! 😃

Can you explain what "matrix type" and "ranking type" are?

Multiple select seems like it'd be easy and fun to add 🙂

For "odd one out", I think most words only have a single definition, and if we show synonyms, it'd probably give the answer away. For example, if the options were "car", "automobile", "motor", and "grass", I think it'd be clear that "grass" is the odd one out.
