neoncube From my public conversation with him on Discord, he plans to monetise Deckademy and considers MLWL a competitor. Do you have any thoughts on this?

For instance, how would you define MLWL in relation to Deckademy (different goals/advantages?)? Do you have plan to monetise MLWL (I have no problem with monetisation at all)?

I'd be happy to monetise My Little Word Land, if I can figure out a way to do it that isn't too annoying, but monetization also isn't a primary goal of mine 🙂

I haven't tried out Deckademy, but it seems like a nice product. I wish nphxx well with it 🙂 I'd also be happy to make the old Memrise community course data available to nphxx, if he's interested, so that we don't have multiple people scraping the entirety of Memrise, lol.

At the end of the day, I suppose My Little Word Land, Deckademy, Clozure, Quizlet, etc. are all competitors, to some extent. Hopefully we can carve out niches, so that we don't compete too heavily with each other 🙂

I also think that in this situation, as in all cases, it's good to follow "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." IMO, nphxx has as much right as I to have his day in the sun, which is why I included links to both Deckademy and Eltaurus' script, as well as My Little Word Land, back when I was posting the closure announcement to almost every topic on the Memrise forums, lol.

neoncube Have you had any more thoughts on monetisation? I really want to find a new home for my Memrise learning but we need to pay for it - this will be a huge amount of work and you need to be compensated. I know taking payment would bring a whole host of other issues (financial, expectations, etc) but would be interested in hearing your plans.

FWIW, I'm intrigued to get my grips on .Net MAUI (.Net 6) which provides a way to create cross platform apps, that is, a tool that creates both an Android and an iOS app from a single code-base. In this case without me having to deal with Java (for Android) and Objective-C (for iOS).

Right now I still have to find out how MAUI works and how much work this would/could result in - while I have 20 years of .Net behind me (started with .Net 1.1 in early 2003 - gee, I'm getting old!), including 15 years (on and off) with WPF - which is somewhat similar in terms XAML and stuff -, MAUI and its concepts might prove to be very different, in which case I might even have to find out that I don't have the means (time-wise) to create something suitable. With a bit of luck, I'll know more in mid January (got a first MAUI book right next to me now).

Why am I even writing this: I'd really rather create my own database for the courses, but seeing that this would involve quite a bit of work too, I plan to postpone any decision about that until I have at least a proof of concept (POC) for an Android app that utilizes whatever data it gets for sessions (such as learning, reviewing, speed-reviewing, difficult words, pretty much what Memrise currently offers, albeit different). This is simply because the app-side is the biggest uncertainty-factor in the whole game.
While I will of course have to make assumptions about the way data is to be collected for presentation, the app could of course pull its data from anywhere else, too. At least if there's a means to load it from a database like the one that MLWL utilizes (and of which I know nothing yet).

So the question is: what are you actually using, @neoncube and can an external application (already?) pull data from it, or are you planning to provide anything with this respect?

But the web interface seems fine on an Android phone.

Regarding monetization, I am worried that copyright of the data might be an issue. Currently, it seems that the data is not transferred after obtaining the creator's consent, but I imagine that this is overlooked by the fact that it is provided free of charge.

7shi I don't think those are related. "Deck" is simply a common word for a set of flashcards, so I imagine the creator of Deckademy named it after that. The "Decks" user on Memrise probably exists because they were planning to move community courses to a separate platform called Decks a few years ago and this is some kind of remnant from that process.

I emailed the creator of Deckademy the other day and in his reply he mentioned that he was hesitant to important too many Memrise courses precisely because of copyright concerns. I don't think there will be too much competition between these two sites! Currently I prefer Deckademy's features, but I also appreciate MLWL as an archive of courses that would otherwise be lost. I will keep using both to see how they develop 🙂

I was just thinking this morning about ways to monetize! 🙂 I think I have 5-6 ideas for this. Let me see if I can write up a list 🙂 (But probably not until tomorrow; I'm still getting my sleep schedule back on track after my Hawaii trip 😛)
