kangyi29 I used to use Memrise a lot, back in the day, to learn Chinese vocabulary. At the time, they only had community courses. I really liked the site, but I wasn't really able to recommend it to other people, because when I did, they kept running into bugs. When I created My Little Word Land, I didn't want it to be a clone of Memrise, because that seemed kind of lame, so I developed a new learning algorithm (partly based off of a userscript made by the Memrise user cooljingle -- thanks, cooljingle! π ). I also tried to keep the visual style pretty different from Memrise.
Fast forward a few years, and Memrise announced that they would be shutting down the community courses and that I was welcome to clone them to my site! I'm still very, very thankful to Ben Whately and Memrise for this π
I left my job a year ago, went back and visited my family for a few months, and now have been floating around Asia. It's been awesome, and I've been really thankful to have been able to work on this site while I didn't have a job! I think I would have died of boredom otherwise XD
Longterm, if this site continues to grow, I have some ideas for monetization, but I think the math on that only works out if there are, perhaps, 1,000 or more active users. I'm not too concerned about this, though. I have money in the bank, I'm living cheaply, and God is good π
Thanks for the kind words, too! ^_^ One thing that I loved about Memrise was the community forums, and I hope that one day we have lively forums here, too π
