  • Preparing to remove official Memrise courses from My Little Word Land

Hi everyone,

It looks like the official Memrise courses need to be removed from My Little Word Land.

Memrise and I discussed this via email, and the core issue appears to be that Memrise has signed release forms and licenses with various people to use recordings of their audio in the Memrise official courses, but Memrise does not have permission to grant others the rights to use to this content.

I'm not clear on whether it would be possible to remove the audio from the official Memrise courses and leave the rest of the course still intact, but my feelings are that it would be best to remove the entire course.

My apologies to everyone who is already taking these courses on My Little Word Land. My only regret is that I didn't discuss this with Memrise earlier.

My current plan of action is something like this:

  1. Hide the official Memrise courses, so that new people aren't enrolling in them.
  2. Remove the courses and inform everyone who was enrolled in them.

My apologies, again, that I didn't discuss this with Memrise sooner. Hopefully this doesn't cause too much undue hardship. I'm still very thankful to Memrise for letting us host copies of the community courses, and I can definitely understand why they can't or don't want us to also host version of the official Memrise courses.

I've hidden the official Memrise courses from the courses list, so that new people won't enroll in them.

neoncube [KEEP] the official Memrise courses and leave the rest of the course still intact

    This would be my preference.

I think it's only the Videos that are probably covered by this issue.

The alternative audio (speech) could be by MemRise staff or even audio available via the internet.

And if not, the audio perhaps could be uploaded by people keen to look after the speechless version.

Is it worth asking that set of questions?

    PS

    @[deleted] I tend to agree - sad.

To be honest, based on Mr. Ben's statement in the following post, I was concerned that his intention did not include the official courses.

I'll miss the official courses, but I understand needing to remove them. 🙂 I'm just very grateful for the community courses and thanks so much for your hard work on this site.

DW7 In the emails I exchanged with Memrise, they were very polite, but I think they would rather us not have copies of the old or new Memrise courses on My Little Word Land. I'm fine with it 🙂

@[deleted] What about mems? I remember you saying that installing the function of mems in MLWL is not in your to-do list. I respect that, but can you negotiate with Memrise about releasing the database of mems somewhere so that they won't be lost forever, because Memrise doesn't seem to have the plan to reintroduce mems into their product?

7shi They need to either release it to the public or reinstall it in their product because it's not right to just let the effort of thousands of mem creators disappear forever.

johnastsang Since there seems to be no plan to implement Mems at MLWL, you will have to show another application for the Mems data in order to negotiate with Memrise. I think that it would mean creating something like MLWL or Deckacademy on your own.

Courses that were made by the Decks user have now also been removed.
