I can start Learn without clicking on [Begin course]. It goes into the Dashboard, but does not count me as a learner.

Wow, there were a lot of bugs here O_O Words were being counted even after they'd been deleted, authors weren't being counted as users of their own courses, and the bug that you reported above!

I think I've fixed everything, but I need to do some testing before I release a new version 🙂

It'd also be nice to go through and recalculate the user and word counts for all existing courses.

This should, finally, be fixed! 🙂

I've recalculated the user counts for the 212 courses that were affected by this 🙂 I expect that this affected course rankings quite a bit.

I recalculated word counts for all of the courses, too, but only three courses were affected, haha.
