  • Backing up things from Memrise

I've been trying to back up as much data from Memrise as possible.

So far, I've backed up these things:

  • All courses that were public as of somewhere around November 2023
  • Audio
  • Images
  • Course details, such as course picture and description.
  • Information about which levels which words were in.

Other things that might be nice to back up:

  • Multimedia levels.
  • Everyone's user profiles, so that we have a backup of what courses people were teaching/learning.

Work in progress:

  • Backing up unlisted and incomplete courses. I've almost finished downloading the basic course information but still need to download each course's vocabulary, audio, images, etc.

Anything else to add to this list? 🙂

Note to self: I also need to redownload Chinese/Japanese courses, since I had been learning those on Memrise and had ignored words in some of the courses.

Can you "see" the mems (or anything connected to them) in whatever JSON (?) you pull from their servers?

So pleased you've saved Multimedia levels - will these be added to 'our' courses?

This is brilliant - thanks for saving not only a list of the courses we support, but also those we were learning on MemRise.

Everyone's user profiles, so that we have a backup of what courses people were teaching/learning.

Incidentally did you access peoples' description used in the MemRise Forum?

We were told that Mems were saved - but I wonder whether you could be given access to them?
Or in time if we could upload them if we saved them.

(At one stage we were able to save our own mems - but not sure if available by user?)

Have you thought of saving user points?

@Olaf.Rabbachin I haven't seen any hint of the mems. I think they were totally removed.

@7shi Thanks 🙂 I think there are some multimedia levels with embedded video or audio that I need to download, too.

@DW7 I actually haven't downloaded the multimedia levels yet; they're on the list of things that still need to be downloaded 🙂 Sadly, I didn't have time to download people's descriptions from the Memrise forums, although I would have loved to, if nothing else than just for old time's sake 🙁

      I don't think I'll save user points.

Indeed, I might read a mention in the Memrise Community Forum about providing Mems data with the specific name of Memrise staff.

But at that time I did not understand the situation and I might misread the context.

In any case, I didn't save the text, so I don't know anything more. I did not know that the forum would be closed so soon.

Could there not a new party to start a Memrise like app with community made courses with the same learning experience where we all pay a (small) amount? I think many people would love that!

I'm actually thinking about making exactly that (using .Net MAUI for both iOS and Android). I'm however not yet able to do that (timewise) and it might take quite some time to come up with something.

When I'm ready, I suppose I might also get in contact with @[deleted], just in case there's something like REST APIs on MLWL that such an app could consume. But again, that's all quite a bit of time away. I'm not aware of anybody else planning or already developing anything at present.

I think we both realise a lot of people would like to keep the community made courses and are willing to pay something for it. Memrise made the strategic mistake to try to support both community courses and their own commercial courses. They might come back on this strategy because a lot of people end their subscription now. Thank you for your effort and realising the commercial chances to maintain the community courses. It is a great concept with a lot of chances. I cannot imagine a world without this.

It would be great if someone could add an App that would use all the valuable data and testing systems that @neoncube has achieved on MLWL.

Hello, I joined MLWL after Memrise closed the direct usage of the community courses on Jyutping, Hakka, Wu, Cantonese in Memrise app. I checked Reddit that Memrise may throw away all community courses in future, then I found MLWL would back up an archive. I still hope that MLWL would have a copy but they are still unavailable.

Chinese is an umbrella of many small languages and even in writing there are different types: simplified or traditional. I hope that MLWL will back up those asap.

As a reference, those Memrise for Hare as follows:

7shi I took a screenshot! 🙂 (See the last sentence for the mention of mems)

I suppose you could email cs@memrise.com and see if they'll send you a .zip or something of the mems 🙂

It does seem like a lot of people are interested in an app. I wouldn't be opposed to making one 🙂

I think nphxx has mentioned that he might also make an app for deckademy.com at some point.

@Olaf.Rabbachin Sorry I didn't respond to the post that you made about this a while back. If you end up making an app before I do, let me know, and maybe we can work something out in regards to API's. Or if you want to wait until My Little Word Land perhaps make a mobile app, that works, too 🙂

Kingextreme Let me see what I can do about getting the Chinese courses uploaded 🙂 That's actually the language that I've been learning via Memrise and My Little Word Land, so I'm also very interested in preserving those courses! ^_^

neoncube Oh! I think this is what I read. And he is exactly Mr. Ben you are talking about on Reddit!

            https://forum.mylittlewordland.com/d/118-memrise-ceo-just-published-blog-post-about-changes-to-website-and-app/14

I have read several discussions about Mems and wanted to confirm the situation. However, I am not building the system by myself, so it is unreasonable to ask him to provide the data.

In any case, this screenshot is valuable because the relationship between Memrise and MLWL is no longer known as the Memrise Community Forum has disappeared.

            a month later

@Kingextreme Sorry, I forgot to follow up on this. As you may have already noticed, most of the Mandarin and other Chinese dialect courses have been uploaded 🙂
