After reading that memrise would be deleting my courses after 2025, I was very disappointed and concerned. The courses I made took MANY hours of typing in words to create. It literally took me almost a year of on-and-off dedicated time to get 10,000 german words typed into four lessons (didn't realize it would be such a time sink!). I made these lessons available to everyone since I made all the articles for nouns available, which duolingo and other memrise courses do not. Anyone who studies German knows that the noun AND the article must be learned together, so why this is not a standard teaching method astonishes me. So I took it upon myself to do a frequency list of the 10,000 most frequently used words, including articles for the nouns. Initially this was just to be for my own study, but I thought others might benefit from it and since then over 70 people have been using my courses. What a waste it would be for these courses to be deleted just so memrise can create yet another Duolingo like course series for profit from an open source beginning, just as Duolingo did. I used to love Duolingo when it was opensource, since you could tell that the contributors were making a real effort to teach the languages. After they went commercial and started pushing me to get a subscription or buy gems to do the courses, I just had enough…. Opensource is for a community of like-minded people helping one another, and going for-profit definitely loses that feeling. And I don't need any more people digging around in my mostly empty wallet when there is a free resource somewhere if you look for it…..
