Offline review functionality

Would love to be able to download a course to be able to do reviews without wifi. It's common to cram vocab on flights and transit, so this would be a very appreciated feature by many users! It could totally replace Anki for offline study too.

Requirements would be:

Site frontend is PWA compatible
You can click Download on a course and it will pull everything into a local IndexedDB
Includes audio files (using something like https://github.com/kevincennis/AudioStore)
Includes your per-word progress, so the SRS can work

It would NOT need to sync back to the server when you go back online (though that would be nice).

My original thoughts on offline functionality were that it would probably be a good feature to have as part of a paid app, available via the app store, and having a "read-only" PWA as a first steps towards this sounds like a great idea! 🙂

I'm also a big fan of doing things by half-measures, so adding read-only functionality first and then syncing functionality later sounds great.

I think @Olaf.Rabbachin is kind of in the same boat with regards to offline functionality.

@foolmoron Did you run into a situation recently where it would have been nice to have this?

neoncube I'm about to go on a 12 hour flight to Japan and I'm worried I won't be able to access the site (even with wifi you can lose it when flying over the ocean)

I'm afraid that if I did add this functionality, it would probably take a couple of months to implement and release.

You could try screenshotting or physically printing some vocab sheets for the trip.

For what it's worth, though, in my experience, probably the best way to kill time on an international flight is to bring earplugs, a sleep mask, and a coat and sleep, and also to download a bunch of phone games that work offline.

My recommendations for offline phone games:

Rogue Slime
Crossy Road
Dungeon Cards
Going Balls
Neon Wings
Tricky Castle (Can't remember if this one works offline, but it should)

(Some games might require opening them after they're downloaded so that you can log in, and then they should work offline)

I've done many long flights so I'm not worried about that. But I'd enjoy cramming some SRS, and I don't really like any of the other options. And yeah did not expect this feature any time soon.
