  • Selecting [Any language] [Any language]

In "View public courses", I have made the following selections:

  • I want to learn [Any language]
  • I speak [Any language]

Firefox froze and didn't start working after waiting 3 minutes, so I had no choice but to force close it. I understand that this is due to the fact that there are too many items. However, this kind of selection should not be so unusual. I would like to limit the number of items that can be loaded at once.

    Hi 7shi,

Sorry about that '-_- This is definitely one of the things on my list 🙂 I also need to add search functionality.

7shi BTW, do you have any suggestions for how courses that you're learning should be sorted? DW7 suggested to me via email that sorting them alphabetically might be a good choice.

I'm also thinking that it might make sense to group them per language, in case people are learning multiple languages.

neoncube For now, I think alphabetical order is fine. If the number of users here increases to some extent, I think it would be reasonable to order them by popularity like Memrise, but it is still too early to tell.

I would be happy to have groupings.

      a month later

7shi I finally got around to removing the "Any language" option XD (And I added a search feature and pagination! 🙂 )

It might be nice to put the "Any language" option back in at some point, but I think it's currently resulting in too much data being transferred, since I'm doing all of the pagination client-side.

I'm also concerned that people would select "Any language" and then search for a language name, which wouldn't give very good results. Perhaps it's better to force people to select a language 🙂

neoncube I added a search feature and pagination!

The search feature is only available after you pick the source-target pair though.

The pagination is actually a step back IMHO. But I see that the number of courses can get quite large in which case pagination guarantees quicker results. :-)

However, couldn't you allow to optionally load all recs or at least let users specify the count per page?

Last but not least - the page-dropdown is always at the top, I'd recommend to make a copy at the bottom.

May I suggest that the "I speak" dropdown does NOT include non-languages.

Currently it shows all the course categories and is not relevant.

I've also wondered if you should have TWO "I want to learn" dropdowns.

One for "I want to learn a language" and another for "I want to learn a subject". (or " … a non-language subject"

It would reduce the amount of scrolling (but I see one can type the first letter and it goes to it - brilliant).

However the advantage of seeing every subject is it might inspire people to try something else.
