Feature Request - "Learn with Locals" for Official 1 to 7 courses.

One of the features I like in MemRise's 1 to 7 language courses is the "Learn with Locals" option.

I've used it with Italian and French.

As those original courses have been downloaded (and are available on MLWL), could you set up that option eventually, @neoncube please?

DW7 It may be difficult to get permission to use the videos, but I feel that this feature is the origin of the "immersion" they often refer to.

I've been thinking about this, but I think it'd probably be best to avoid asking Memrise for permission to use their Learn with Locals videos. My understanding is that Memrise flew to various European countries in order to film these videos, which must have been pretty expensive, so they probably view these videos as a valuable asset (or at least they should! 🙂)

You are right that they took time to tour Europe by bus (which would have cost a lot of money) to enhance their courses, but thinking about it, they have happily given you (and others) permission to use the outgoing structure, phrases and the audio of their courses.

These video clips - as far as I can tell - are no longer used in their new format.

Would you like me to contact MemRise, pointing out that our considered opinion is - out of respect - not to use the "Learn with Locals" video clips, but would they mind if did we included them?

DW7 Thanks for the offer 🙂 Let me think about it. Even if Memrise is okay with us using the Learn with Locals feature, I'm not sure I want to add video support to My Little Word Land, partly because of storage and bandwidth costs. Or rather, I might be okay with hosting the Learn with Locals videos, but I'm not sure I'd want to let everyone upload video for their own courses.

I am interested in Italian and French and I have downloaded those MemRise 1 to 7 courses (as raw data), which actually includes the video clips, so I am happy.

I agree, that although the file sizes are small (mere kb) if that is done for all official courses and worse, if others are allowed to upload larger files, it would be too much storage etc, as you say. (Plus some might be inappropriate.)

So thanks you for thinking about it, and I agree it's best not to provide them - unless you restrict it to only those MemRise Official courses in use (and you can prevent others uploading videos).
